Bhabananda Deka lecture Call to re-assess Gandhian Economic Philosophy (The Assam Tribune)
Guwahati, Tuesday, December 15, 2009

GUWAHATI, Dec 14 – ‘Economists should adopt a more holistic approach in their pursuits. Every aspect of human activity has an economic component. Development is mostly measured in economic terms and every development activity is undertaken in terms of their economic viability and economic justification. However, unless such development is inclusive, embraces each and every strata of the society, results in balanced growth and delivers a healthy and happy environment, it is of no value,’ stated Shantikam Hazarika, director, Assam Institute of Management at the 3rd Bhabananda Deka Memorial Lecture titled: ‘The Subject of Economics in Higher Education’.

The lecture was organised under the aegis of the Economic Planning Forum of the Department of Economics, Pragjyotish College, according to a press release here.

Hazarika cautioned, ‘On the other hand, the impacts on environment as a result of economic development are endangering the very sustainability of human life on this planet. Therefore, it is imperative that study of Economics embraces all other disciplines into its fold. Economics must be integrated into the study of engineering, medicine, law, human behaviour, political science and all other such professions.”

Hazarika also suggested the need to restudy and reassess the Gandhian Economic Philosophy, which advocated the need to adopt appropriate technology, the trusteeship concept and putting a limitation on wants. He said in today’s situation, where income and regional disparity was increasing and a large chunk of the population remained impoverished, a complete change in the mindset from economic well-being of self to that of society was an immediate necessity.

The lecture organised in the college’s seminar hall was followed by an interactive session in which faculties and students of economics and other departments participated.

Earlier, Dr Dayananda Pathak, Principal, Pragjyotish College in his welcome address recalled the stellar qualities of the late Bhabananda Deka, former principal of the college and a pioneer in writing books on economics in Assamese.

The lecture meeting was presided over by Atanu Kumar Chowdhury, Head of the Department. Namita Das of theEconomics department felicitated the guest speaker Hazarika, the release added.

Microfinance Aiding Farmers (Fourth Bhabananda Deka memorial lecture) (The Assam Tribune)
Guwahati, Tuesday, December 21, 2010

(Staff Reporter)
GUWAHATI, Dec 20 – “To make democracy function effectively, we must have inclusive growth. Microfinance has given a choice to those who were earlier excluded from the traditional institutional mode of finance. Since more than 80 per cent of Indian farmers do not get loans from such institutions, emergence of micro-finance has been beneficial to the rural poor.”

Dr Amiya Sharma, executive director of the Rastriya Gramin Vikash Nidhi (RGVN) opined this at the fourth Bhabananda Deka memorial lecture held at the Pragjyotish College on Saturday. The annual lecture was organised under the aegis of the Economic Planning Forum, Department of Economics, Pragjyotish College.

Dr Sharma, in his lecture, sounded a note of caution against the unscrupulous elements that are entering into the field of microfinance. “There is a need for regulating microfinance so that the poor are no longer exploited in new ways. Educational institutions like the Pragjyotish College should come forward for networking so that the actual beneficiaries get the right message timely. This will further ensure right type of action for those who have been excluded from the country's growth process for a long time,” he added.

Earlier, Dr Dayananda Pathak, principal, Pragjyotish College paid homage to the late Bhabananda Deka, former principal and HoD, Economics of Pragjyotish College. Dr Pathak said that late Deka was not only a scholar in economics but also a prominent writer who wrote books on economics in Assamese, making the subject intelligible to one and all in Assam. The function was presided over by Atanu Kr Chowdhury, HoD, Economics, of the college.
